Next Generation Dairy Farmers

Massachusetts has 117 dairy farms with 17 located in Berkshire county. To keep those farms running and financially solvent consumers need to support them along with the other farms in the area. Most people don’t realize that a majority of our food comes from elsewhere, unless they read the label in detail.

With the average age of 60, the next generation whether family or not is crucial to maintain these farming operations. (read more)

MDAR: State Agricultural Officials Ask Public to be on Alert for Hatching of Invasive Spotted Lanternfly Eggs

BOSTON- The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) is asking the public to keep an eye out for the invasive pest known as spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) during the spring planting season due to the risk of egg masses being accidentally brought in on shipments of trees imported from other states. NEW YORK FARM BUREAU STATEMENT ON 2021-2022 STATE BUDGET

The following may be attributed to NYFB President David Fisher:

“The New York State budget is an investment in the future of our diverse farms and local food system. In particular, the fully funded research, marketing, conservation, and animal health programs that New York Farm Bureau members advocated for will provide the framework for growth and opportunity that are needed coming off a challenging year. Additionally, we are pleased to see Nourish NY is now a permanent program that will benefit our farms and people in need of healthy food in every corner of our state. The extension of the farm workforce retention tax credit is also applauded to continue to help offset rising labor costs that put New York’s farmers in an uncompetitive marketplace position. That concern over the high cost of doing business in New York remains with the scope of the full budget plan.

New York Farm Bureau would like to especially thank the agriculture committee chairs, Senator Michelle Hinchey and Assembly Member Donna Lupardo, for their leadership through the budget process, along with the governor and every member of the legislature who support New York agriculture. It is a leading driver of our economy and provider of local, home grown food. The pandemic put the spotlight on the essential work of our farmers and employees, and we are grateful that effort was recognized in the final state budget agreement.”
